Lumineers are an easy, sustainable and painless solution to minor dental issues such as discolored, chipped, or slightly crooked teeth. In just 2-3 treatments the ultrathin veneers are placed over your teeth to perfect your smile. Lumineers can offer many benefits compared to porcelain veneers, as this type of veneer requires little to no tooth reduction. Lumineers comfortably brighten, align and mask chipped teeth without impacting the structure of your tooth.

At Harmony Dental Arts in New Jersey, our award-winning orthodontists and board-certified top dentists work closely together to provide you the best possible care. Our holistic approach combines excellent training with years of skilled experience to customize your dental treatment at our Clifton practice. • No major tooth reduction necessary
  • Reversible treatment (in most cases)
  • Long-lasting results up to 20 years

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are a cosmetic teeth improvement method where porcelain facings are placed on existing teeth. These facings are a thin layer that covers the tooth. Lumineers work differently because they require minimal intervention by the dentist or orthodontist and generally it is not necessary to grind or reduce teeth. The porcelain facings of Lumineers are very thin, between 0.5 and 0.3 millimeters (as thin as a contact lens). Since Lumineers is a facing method, the patient also gets whiter teeth (due to whiter facings). It has been clinically proven that Lumineers can last for twenty years.

During your first appointment, the cosmetic dentist at Harmony Dental Arts checks whether Lumineers are the best suitable solution for your dental needs. If this is the case, a mold of your teeth is made. In the next treatment(s), the Lumineers will be fixed to the teeth. This process will be entirely painless and in most cases no tooth reduction is necessary.

Lumineers VS Porcelain Veneers

Many patients who visit Harmony Dental Arts in Clifton, NJ, ask cosmetic dentist Dr. Maria Sokolina about the differences between Lumineers and porcelain veneers. Based on her experience as a cosmetic dentist for over 15 years, Dr. Sokolina is able to determine which veneer is best for her patients. She often recommends Lumineers to patients that have their natural teeth intact and whose teeth are fairly white and straight, while porcelain veneers are often better suited for patients with severe discoloration or a “tight bite”.

While the thinness of Lumineers makes them look natural and avoids a possible bulky appearance, their thin size can be a disadvantage as it can diminish the whitening effect, allowing dark discoloration to shine through. Lumineers still can be a good option for candidates with slightly yellow teeth when combined with a dental treatment plan to eliminate the discoloration.

On the other hand, when dealing with dark discoloration, porcelain veneers may be a better solution because the natural color of porcelain veneers hides stains and discoloration better. When the aim is to achieve the most natural-looking smile, porcelain veneers may deliver better results than Lumineers. When prepared correctly by an expert dental team such as Harmony Dental Arts, the veneers will mirror the natural teeth and provide improvements where needed.

Furthermore, porcelain veneers can be more suitable for patients with a “tight bite”, which is a lack of space between the top and bottom teeth. This is because applying Lumineers to the tooth surface slightly increases the biting surface in the mouth, and can change the patient’s bite pattern. However, during your first consultation in our office in Clifton, New Jersey, expert dentist Dr. Sokolina will carefully analyze your teeth to recommend the best suitable treatment in your specific case.

Lumineers are not recommended in the following cases:

  • When a patient grinds or clenches their teeth
  • With existing crowns, caps or bridges
  • With a “tight bite”
  • Masking dark discoloration

When considering the benefits of porcelain veneers or Lumineers, the result of either treatment is dependant on the skill and expertise of the cosmetic dentist and their team. A major advantage of choosing the experts at Harmony Dental Arts is having access to both their highly trained teams of dentists and orthodontists in order to ensure your dental goals are completely met.

FAQ

Who is the ideal candidate for Lumineers?

Lumineers can be an easy and economical alternative to more traditional porcelain veneers. The ideal Lumineers patient has their natural, fairly white and straight teeth intact. Lumineers have a whitening effect but cannot mask considerable discoloration. The patient should also have space between their top and bottom teeth so that the Lumineers will not interfere with the natural bit pattern.

In which cases are Lumineers not the best option?

Lumineers may not be the best option to whiten dark discoloration. If the underlying color of the teeth is yellowish to orange-brown, that discoloration may still show through the thin layer of Lumineers. With a tight bite, Lumineers are not the best solution either as they slightly increase the biting surface in the mouth, and can change your bite pattern. Furthermore, Lumineers are not suitable for patients who grind or clench their teeth as that can fracture the edges of the Lumineers.

Can Lumineers be placed over existing crown or bridgework?

At Harmony Dental Arts we do not recommend placing Lumineers over existing crowns, caps or bridges. It could result in over-contoured porcelain which can irritate the gums. It is also difficult to mask the underlying black color that shows through the crown. Other treatments would give a more aesthetically pleasing result.

What is the alternative to Lumineers?

For patients who are not ideal Lumineers candidates, porcelain veneers are almost always the best alternative. It is a common misconception that porcelain veneers result in tooth sensitivity. If performed by a skilled dentist, porcelain veneers provide natural, bright and beautifully aligned results without any sensitivity, even in cases where the patient grinds their teeth, has a tight bite, crowns, or dark discoloration.

What treatment provides the best results?

It is always important to undergo a thorough consultation with a highly trained and experienced cosmetic dentist to go over the options, pros, cons, risks, and benefits of the procedure in question. Which treatment gives you the best results will depend on your dental situation, your cosmetic wishes and on the skills and expertise of the dentist or orthodontist involved.
